EVE AFTER DARK - LET`S DO THE FREAK

Opend: 1979
Name: Eve after Dark
Original Founder: Lonzo Williams a.k.a. Grandmaster Lonzo

Lonzo began his career as a mobile DJ in the late ‘70s disco genre. With Roger Clayton he started a company called Z-Car Productions functioning as party and function organizers. Soon parting ways, (Roger would start up Uncle Jamm’s Army) Lonzo was left to continue his work as a mobile DJ and covered two main clubs by 1977-79 Doodo’s and Eve’s After Dark.

In 1979 Lonzo had assumed control of Eve’s and on Fridays he would spin records from 9 at night until 5 the next morning, turning the crowd over three or four times. To share the load, Lonzo in the early 1980s built a team of DJs called Disco Construction inspired by the famous “Brass Construction”. The Cru played the usual: Donna Summer, Average White Band, George Clinton, Parliament and Prince.

Eve after Dark was more like a Radio Station. It was a heavy DJ rotation. Lonzo and Unknown DJ were the guys who handle the crowd when the dancefloor was packed. Dr. Dre and Yella handled the smaller crowd. Lonzo described this situation like managing a footballteam in a important match. What ever it needs to win (to rock the party) he put in the right DJ´s.

Eve was known as a high-class club--dresses for the ladies and ties and slacks for the gentlemen. Lonzo dressed his Jheri-curled DJs in matching lavender outfits and devised Temptations-style choreography. The club became a fixture on the dance map of Los Angeles. "People came out in droves," Lonzo recalls. "It was a constant party." Because it was technically in the county of Los Angeles it didn´t fall under the rules of Los Angels city what makes it possible to open the club till 5 in the morning. This opend the way for after hour parties in Eve.

The guys who build up the equipment at that time formed the so called “Wreckin Cru”. But this was more then just a bunch of guys workin at Eve after Dark – It was a honor to be a member of this crew wearing fat jackets showing the name “Wreckin Cru” at the back.

In the early 80´s the disco music died and the young upcoming Rap music hit´s the west coast and his clubs. Songs like Planet Rock entered the dance floor and Dre mixed it with the old Motown song “Please Mr. Postman”. Two songs with completely different tempos and moods. For whatever reason, it worked.
The crowd went crazy and Lonzo thought "Hmm, what do we have here."

Eve After Dark was a showcase or opportunitys for many rappers and more particularly DJS to showcase their skills at the events/parties that Lonzo arranged within the nightclub. Cil-n-tel, Dr Dre and DJ Yella would become frequent DJS that would become booked DJ sets in the Eve After Dark.
Lonzo saw potential in all three of them and decided to form the “World Class Wreckin Cru”.
The name was a combination from the already existing “Wreckin Cru” and the upcoming Olympic Games happened in Los Angels in 1984. Lonzo said “At that time everything was –World Class-“. So he put the things together and one of the most popular West Coast Groups of the 80´s were born. The first production with titles like “Slice” were produced in a small studio located in the back of Eve after Dark.
